The Missouri State women's golf team ran away from the field Tuesday (Oct. 18) to post a 16-stroke victory at the MSU/Payne Stewart Memorial at Rivercut Golf Course in Springfield, Mo.
Junior Hermine Greyling made it a Bears' sweep of the tournament titles as she won a three-way, sudden-death playoff on the first hole to claim medalist honors. She carded a final-round 73 to go with 75-77 for a 225 total, the same as Creighton's Celeste Gassman and McCall Christopher of Indiana State.
MSU took a five-shot lead over UMKC into the final round after posting 302-306--608 in Monday's play, and then shot 302 in cold, blustery conditions Tuesday, the best round of the day by 11 strokes.
UMKC finished second with 304-309-313--626, while Houston Baptist was third at 319-302-318--639. Indiana State was fourth with 947, followed by Drury (951), South Dakota State (954), Drake (958), Bradley (960), Stephen F. Austin (969), Creighton (994) and South Dakota (1038).
Individually, senior Kelsey Welber and freshman Megan Thompson tied for fourth for MSU with 227 totals; Welber posted 76-76-75 and Thompson had 76-78-73. Senior Catherine Dolan tied for 23rd after shooting 75-82-81--238, while junior Emma Clegg shot 76-75 the first two rounds, but was disqualified after the final round for signing an incorrect scorecard.
Three Bears played as individuals and were eligible in the medalist race, but not the team scoring. Senior Emily Potts was 17th with 74-80-80--234, while freshman Renske van Lent finished 43rd after carding 84-82-84--250. Senior Emily Matthews recorded 83-87-84--254 to tie for 49th.
